With the latest Neon Companion App release, we are introducing a new aperture-aware temporal filtering stage that improves the stability and quality of Neon eye-state outputs, especially during blinks, partial eyelid closure, and other moments where the eye is only partly visible.
NeonNet measures eye-state frame by frame: 3D Eye Poses (optical axes and eyeball centers), Pupil Diameters, and Eye Openness (eyelid aperture).
When the eye is open, these measurements are highly informative. But not every frame contains the same amount of visual information. During partial eyelid closure, measurements can remain correct on average but become noisier. When the eye is fully closed, eye aperture is the only measurement that can be estimated reliably.
The new filter uses this relationship between eye aperture and measurement uncertainty. When the eye is wide open, new measurements are trusted strongly. When the eye is mostly closed, the filter relies more on recent history, smoothing over frames with less visual information.
Technically, this is implemented with a Kalman filter that models expected measurement noise as a function of eye aperture, while also accounting for the short-term dynamics of each eye-state variable.
This allows Neon to provide more stable and robust eye-state estimates across a wider range of natural eye conditions.
